Rumors and Speculations

Note: Do not take anything you read below as concrete, it's all rumors and speculations gathered from message boards and websites.

Pontiac is undergoing massive changes for the next few years. Some Pontiac models will be dropped from the line-up, while new models will be added. It already confirmed that the Firebird and Trans-Am has been put on hiatus. In the next few years, the Sunfire and Bonneville are expected to be discontinued. The replacement for the Sunfire is none other then the Vibe, while the reason behind the Bonneville demise is that there is one too many sedans in the Pontiac line-up.

The Grand Prix will lose it coupe version and become a more luxurious sedan without the high price of the Bonneville. While it will move on to the next platform, it will also retain its entire previous characteristic. The characteristic being front-wheel drive, v-6 engine with an option of a supercharger.

The rumor of the GTO returning to the Pontiac line-up looks more realistic each time is it mentioned in the message boards and on websites. Some of the evidence of its return includes Holden, a company in Australia, using the GTO name on its high performance Monaro, GM registering the GTO name for trademark, and Pontiac interest in the GTO for the past few years. There's speculation that Holden would produce the GTO on the Sigma platform and be badge as a Pontiac in the US or that it will be produced in Bowling Greens, KY along side the Corvette.

The possibility of the Firebird and Trans-Am returning to the line-up in the future depends mostly on if GM will bring back the Chevrolet Camaro in 2004. If the Camaro is moderately successful, the Firebird could comeback a year or two later as an alternative for those who do not like the Camaro styling. The cost of producing the Firebird will not be a factor, as it will share the platform and engine with the Camaro. Why would GM consider doing this? To give people a styling choice between a sleek, sexy Camaro or the Aggressive look of the Firebird. This would add to the GMs profit, as the Firebird would be unlikely to cut into Camaros sale too much and boost the overall sale of the combined Camaro/Firebird models.

The Future holds many possibilities and changes, so nothing is concrete until you see them on the floor room of your nearest Pontiac dealership.
