Pontiac Vibe
Can you feel it?
Starting in 2002, Pontiac will be offering a new model (mini-van/suv/
car/something… something…) in the lineup. It’s Pontiac latest attempt to
attract the young hip crowd into the Pontiac dealership. Pontiac even went
so far as to call this new model the Vibe. The Vibe is a PT Cruiser clone
that offers many features such as roof rack, cell phone holder, and
Liftgate/liftglass. The base engine is a Toyota 1.8L DOHC (VVT-it) 4cyl
engine rated at 130hp @ 6000rpm. While the more performance orientated
Vibe GT offers a Toyota 1.8L DOHC (VVTL-it) 4 cyl engine rated at 180hp
@6000rpm and 130 lb.-ft @ 6800rpm. These are the same engines found in the
Toyota Celica.
VibeAWD is the third Vibe model that is self-explanatory. This model
features AWD (all-wheel drive), but is not available with the more powerful
Toyota engine. Standard for this model is ABS, daytime-running lights,
4-wheel independent suspension, 16” wheels with all-season tires, and
4-speed automatic transmission.
In an effort to gain attention to the Vibe, Pontiac took it to the
road on the warped tour and to X -Games. The Warped tour have a few notable
singers that include Hank Williams III who is the son of Hank Williams Jr.,
Less then Jake, and the vandals. Some of the sports featured at the X-games
are bicycle stunts, skateboarding, in-line skating. These events typically
attract the young-hip crowd that the Pontiac is interested in advertising
the Vibe to.
The Vibe has better chance of success in sales then the eyesore Aztec.
The appearance of the Vibe is much more acceptable and without the sharp
edges and creases that the Aztec has. The price of the Vibe is comparable
to the Chrysler PT Cruiser.
As stated by Pontiac, ”Vibe is equipped for all your life adventures,
big and small. The options are almost endless. All you need to do is supply
the adventure.”
